It's the little things!

20th July 2013
It seems as though somebody once said: “It’s the little things in life that really matter.” Then again we’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t sweat the small stuff…and it’s all small stuff.” Well if that’s the case then you’ve just gotta love the beauty and intricacy of life that you can see and capture through a macro lens!

When it comes to my photography I love color, patterns, textures and surprises! When I put a macro lens on the camera a whole new world of beauty comes into focus.

I have to admit that for quite a while I have been a bit frustrated with my macro lens because it just felt as if I couldn’t get close enough. Yes, I could get the shot but in order to produce the image I had imagined I’d have to crop the living daylights out of the photo. Then when what was left was enlarged it just wasn’t sharp enough (read…pixilation). What to do…what to do?

The answer arrived in a beautiful little box from B & H Photo (there’s always an excuse to buy more equipment!) which contained a Canon Extension Tube. After mounting that little puppy between my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens and my Canon 7D with its 18 megapixel cropped sensor providing a tad bit more magnification…I was in business! Of course, now that I can get REALLY close there are other challenges like the gentle breeze that suddenly appears to be hurricane force winds through the viewfinder not to mention the inevitable camera shake because who in the world can hold a camera still with that kind of magnification?! But a challenge can be fun and that’s why we have tri-pods and remote shutter releases!

It’s the little things that really matter and now I know that a dragonfly’s tongue has little barbs on it…who knew!?
